Portrait study of a girl seated with hands raised to lips. The sitter is Ailsa Marr Hatton, the artist's younger sister. This large work on paper in red chalk was created in 1908 when Ailsa Marr Hatton, who was born in 1893, was fifteen years old. The artist, her brother Brian Hatton, was twenty-one. He completed a number of beautiful finished drawings of both of his sisters and achieved a warmth and affection which is typical of the red chalk portraits.
