This pastel drawing was created in 1905 when the artist was eighteen years old. He has captured, in this pastel drawing, the powerful movements of these two restless horses. The man, either traveller or farm worker, appears diminished by their size and strength but Hatton has also captured the harmony of man and beast working in the countryside. The artist, Brian Hatton, was particularly skilled in the use of pastels and he has created here the soft shadows of evening across the lane as the horses are led home.
