George Frederick Watts

Drawing, 1902

Drawn from life and inscribed Limmerslease, Surrey, April 28th 1902". Limmerlease was the Watts family home which Brian and his mother visited in 1899. Mrs. Watts wrote to Brian's mother: "Your visit was a great pleasure to us. We so greatly sympathise with you in all your hopes and desires for your dear little son, whom nature has so remarkably endowed!...it is a great joy to find him so unspoilt, just the natural unselfconscious boy! Great men differ very widely but ... they are all of them of childlike simplicity".
