Self-portrait, in hunting kit

Painting, 1903

This self portrait, in oils on board, is a full length study of the artist in 1903, aged 16 years. This work has been described as unfinished and it is true that the background paint is laid very thinly and there is very little detail in either the background or on the young man's person. However, Hatton, as all aspiring artists, learned from the work of others and within a body of work there are always discernable influences. The brush strokes are loose and soft, As it stands, this is a dramatic study of light and shadow. One side of the face is in darkness as is his arm, his coat and breeches. This dark, slender figure engages the audience with a sombre gaze.
