The Symonds family owned Oaklea, the house and extensive gardens in Broomy Hill, which were planted with many fashionable imported trees. The Hatton family home (Mount Craig) is directly opposite. The Symonds were notable solicitors in Hereford city. Brian seems to have made this image from the garden of Mount Craig. He depicts two trees, a beech and a Scots pine, in early spring. There are no leaves on the beech tree yet, but half a dozen daffodils are flowering on the ground beneath the trees. The profile in the distance is that of Aconbury Hill, beyond the river Wye to the south. Brian made one or two other studies of trees in the vicinity of his garden.
