Sketch for a portrait. Raper was a Colwall man and Bursar of Trinity College, Oxford, who helped Brian secure a place at Oxford and gave the artist rooms in his own quarters the first year. They enjoyed a lasting friendship until Raper's death in 1915. Raper refused to sit for any other artist but in 1914 when Brian was a struggling young artist he granted him this privilege. Brian wrote: 'It had to be done quickly, and after a heavy champagne lunch, so no one was more surprised and thankful than I that it proved a likeness.' The finished version hangs in Trinity College, Oxford.
