Steam and Water, The Betsy Jane

Drawing, 1910
This pen and ink drawing remains unfinished. It shows two Gypsy women walking down a tow-path following a horse that pulls a barge called 'The Betsy Jane'. Brian was conscious of the sweeping changes that had occurred since the advent of mechanisation in late 19th century. The barge and its bargee are about to disappear in the distance beneath the bridge, whilst the train steams forward high on the embankment, where it will dominate the view. Brian has chosen to include the flamboyantly dressed Gypsies in the foreground, perhaps to suggest that they too are part of the passing scene.
