Knight and Page

Drawing, 1897

This pencil drawing on paper was created in 1897 when the artist, Brian Hatton, was ten years old. This drawing shows the artist's sense of humour as well as his drawing skills. The knight has his sword raised and the page's helmet has been knocked to the ground. The page is sticking out his tongue and grimacing at his master. Many of Hatton's drawings from this time were inspired by tales of mediaeval tournaments, pageants and jousts. In this quick sketch of Knight and page Hatton's accomplished drawing skills are evident. In 1901 he produced, on a similar theme, a watercolour, Knights Retreating.
