Self-portrait: myself in the looking glass, aged 11

Drawing, 1898
Like so many in his generation, Brian Hatton died in the First World War. He was a keen horseman and therefore joined the Worcester Yeomanry. His troop was in action against a large group of Turkish soldiers at Oghratina in Egypt on 23rd April, 1916. Brian volunteered to ride out to fetch reinforcements. Sadly he did not complete the mission and was later found dead.He was a talented artist even as a boy and in this drawing he is self-confidently concentrating on his own image. The picture was awarded a prize by the Royal Drawing Society in 1899. Brian may have known that he would become an artist but he could not have predicted the tragic events that ended his career prematurely.
