Notice of marriage to Biddy

I Troop
A Squadron
Worcester Yeomanry
Newbury

Nov 5th 1914

My dear old Dad,

I have just got married to Biddy today by soldiers licence.

I only decided to go through with it last night and got Biddy down to talk it over with her.

I suppose it is a very rash thing to have done especially in my present circumstances.  But we were both very keen and I think it is a good thing to give way to sentiment sometimes, instead of always calculating the odds – anyway you can rest assured that my wife has not “grabbed” me for her own pecuniary or social gain, as she knows what I am worth and what my chances are and is content to go back to Hereford and slog on with her dancing classes until I come back and am able to support her.  I have every hope of surviving!

We were told at a review on Wednesday that Kitchener’s message was to hold ourselves in readiness to go at any time – he might want us in a few days, weeks or months.  Meanwhile we are not allowed any leave.  I have only got one days honeymoon in Newbury !

I hope when you have got over this little shock that you will give us your blessing, we shall need all we can get!  Yes, I know that I am a silly young fool and all that but I am still your loving son,

 Brian
