This pencil drawing on paper was created in 1900 when the artist, Brian Hatton, was thirteen years old. We can only surmise whether these horse were purchased or are returning unsold. Brian Hatton created many images of horses and it is possible, as with most artists, to identify similarities and influences. This drawing bears some similarity to Runaway, a pen and ink drawing from 1906. The horses are tired, the horse in the foreground reaches out to her colt, those behind are restless. The watercolour Sanger's Circus, painted a year later in 1901, is a comparatively peaceful image whereas this is one of uncertainty.
