Working horses were one of Brian Hatton's favourite subjects. This picture shows two horses silhouetted dramatically against a yellow evening sky, with a tilted horizon and little or no background. Brian conveys their strength and muscularity with great skill. The emphasis is on the horses and their tack, together with the farm-worker, who in this case is known to be Jones the wagoner. Unusually Brian has used watercolour in an opaque way, in the manner of oils, to show the muscles of the animals as they haul the harrows across the rising ground. The contrast between the pale sky and the red earth of Herefordshire is striking.
