The jenny ring was a source of power for threshing corn or churning butter on the farm. Horses were harnessed to a pole, which turned the wheel at ground level. Gears transferred the motion to a drive-shaft connected to the machinery. This mechanism was found by Brian in one of the farms not far from his home in Broomy Hill, Hereford. This composition shows the horses operating in a tightly restricted space under controlled conditions.
