Advance guard patrolling a road

Drawing, 1915

Brian spent time at camps in England before finally going abroad to Egypt with his regiment. This scene is undoubtedly English and is therefore a training exercise simulating actual manoeuvres. It is an accident of birth that Brian experienced the last great war in which horses played a full part. He was ideally suited to working with horses and recording events artistically. He would have made an excellent war artist, but his pictures were an unofficial record.
